While I'm researching Victorian cut steel buttons for a near future posting, I wanted to share some pictures of the shop. I did all new displays (which now need revamping!- ah- such is the life of a smalls dealer) and thought some of the "vignettes" turned out beautifully. I hope you enjoy these brief glimpses into the past... And join us in the present for some fabulous antiquing~!

Bohemian Rhapsody

Imagine the 1920s...

Gaily colored beads swinging from the necks of bobbed flappers-- Dancing to the Charleston... New ideas floating in the midst of rebellion and smoke.

Beautiful necklace with etched glass pendant and metal stamping

European designers cashed into this "new woman"- A wild creature who cut her hair, smoked cigarettes, and showed off her knees. Sequins, feathers, and other accoutrements bedecked the flapper. But the one singular aspect was her saucy necklace. Czechoslovakia was often the source of this quintessential accessory.

Created in 1918, Czechoslovakia produced glass beads, faceted and molded glass stones and metalwork stampings. Filigree necklaces, bracelets, brooches, buckles, clips, earrings, and rings in the Art Deco style flooded the ever hungry American market. Geometric designs and simple pronged settings are characteristic of this era. Glass bead sautoirs are another Czech specialty. (Sautoirs are defined as a very long chain or beaded necklace, often terminating in a tassel).

Czech jewelry is typically unmarked but look for the signature in the circumference of the jump ring or on the clasp. The style of Czechoslovakian pieces, however, is unmistakable. Fine metalwork, Victorian Revival intricacy, faceted stones, lots of rhinestones, nice prong settings- These are the marks of Bohemian jewelry from the eras between WWI and WWII.

A New Day

Welcome to 2012... And good-bye to 2011. What a fabulous year! Here's just a tiny snippet of what happened to Flotsam and Jetsam in the past 12 months:

Gwyneth Marie Newton, born May 9th, 2011. The greatest joy in my life. Here she is this December with Mommy. She's just wonderful! Her big blue eyes and rosebud lips are ever present reminders of her being a part of me.

September 3rd, 2011. Moved down the street to 3730 Howard Avenue. Best business decision of my life! Sales have been strong and I have a deeper sense of community with the other dealers. We are in a beautiful historic building with tons of natural light and fantastic floor space. I couldn't ask for a better location...

August 2011- Made the choice to join Kate Fine of The Hope Chest in this before mentioned shop. We share the store and each bring a vision and zeal to the business. She is encouraging and knowledgeable. I am grateful God brought her into my life.

November 2011 -Ben, my loving husband of 7 years, lost 50 pounds over the course of the year. He finished his first marathon in Richmond VA in November. I'm so proud of him!

So, that's the VERY short version. Other things include:

Drawing closer to Tim Green, a dear friend of 9 + years. He works and consigns at the shop and is a blessing to Flotsam and Jetsam. Visit his online catalog- The Green Lion.
Finally gave a profit to Beth Youkel of Osiris Books. She supported me for over a year at the old location, never taking in any money. What a wonderful partner!

Working full time. Gwyneth is now in full time daycare - What a transition! The business growth made a distinct change in my life- No longer do I sit languidly waiting on customers to haphazardly walk in. Busy, vibrant, and exciting - All new adjectives for Flotsam and Jetsam.

So, all in all it was one of the best years of my life. Blessings abounded and friendships blossomed. And here's a toast farewell to 2011~

Hope everyone is having a splendid holiday season. All the hustle and bustle- Such fun! Christmas carols and twinkling lights set the mood for a wonderful Christmas...
Wanted to share pictures of my shop window - We finished it just in time for Open House. The colors are so vibrant. And the backdrop is gorgeous. We plan on using it for Valentine's Day as well... You know, it's just around the corner!
I've tried to keep the store stocked with authentic Christmas decorations-- This 1940's stocking is a perfect example of the treasures you'll find here at Flotsam & Jetsam.
Antique children's books line the shelves just waiting for that enthusiastic collector.
A newly found Victorian wrought iron plant stand looks great with a seasonal floral display.

Hello Friends!

Wow! I can't believe it's been almost 2 months since I've posted. Time has flown by... It's amazing how caught up we can be in our daily lives. Travel, family obligations, work- It all conspires against us bloggers... Then there's the inevitable writer's block and procrastination bug (which has often bitten me!)...

On a personal note, I do have one other excuse- I'm 19 weeks pregnant! We are so very excited about Baby Newton. Next week we find out whether it's a boy or a girl... So much to look forward to. We will soon be a family of 3!
So, onto Vintage Thingy Thursday... We've decorated for Christmas at Flotsam & Jetsam and have some wonderful antique and vintage accessories for the holidays. The colors are simply divine! The ornaments add such sparkle to the shop - I wish we could keep them out all year.
I've already sold a number of the older ornaments including several Santas and a multicolored pine cone... Really splendid treasures. But we still have beautiful leaf diecuts and 2 tinsel Santas waiting for that perfect home.

Hopefully dear friends I won't be absent this long again! I hope to see you at least once a week- Let's say that will be my goal to check in 4 times during the holiday season. And I do have one post planned for the unveiling of my Christmas window. So, ta-ta for now and see you again soon!

One of a kind quilts, chandeliers, textiles, and other smalls are simply waiting for you to come and discover them!
Tracie and Linda, the owners of Sweet Peas, are delightful to work with and give each customer attention and time... The shop is a place where you can just wander to your heart's content.

Sinister Delights

Dear Blogland -- What a vacation I've taken from you- Over a month... Wow! So much has been happening with the shop, Etsy, and Rubylane that I've really been on my toes. But now with fabulous fall here, I wanted to stop in for a little "chat".

My main objective is to share my delightfully spooky Halloween window. Isn't it just wonderful? It's even a little more sinister than I originally envisioned but I really think it still works. We used a variety of everyday antiques along with some magical props that set off the tone of this vignette. Weathered sculptures and busts add charm and sophistication while the crystals really add some sparkle (along with the crystal necklaces). We also used dark wood to help carry a more wicked look. So, hopefully my next post won't be a month from now- I also promise to try my best to catch up on reading everyone's writings... Ta-ta! School Days!

With the children back in school, I thought it would be cute to do a classroom scene for September's window. We chose a colorful quilt backdrop along with a gorgeous wooden frame. Details of the scene include a student desk, a "teacher's" chair, a radio flyer and some wonderful treasures sprinkled about. A porcelain doll and a worn velvet toy chest also grace the window.

Speaking of trinkets and baubles, Beth Niquette of The Best Hearts Are Crunchy won the $50 gift certificate to my shop (both online and here at my brick and mortar). I can't wait to see what she picks!

That's right- Vintage games that is! Fresh from a Maryland estate are these fabulous c. 1940s games in excellent condition.
I've never seen a fully intact classic Lotto game before- What a fantastic find~ Even the simple Bingo cards are lovely- And a perfect activity for that next family holiday!
Just look at this Parcheesi game! The board is so bright and colorful- Perfect for a home vignette.

Antique French Embroidered Ribbon

I've always had a special place in my heart for vintage textiles, especially antique trims, ribbon, and lace. Even though I don't sew, I think lace and it's variants are simply divine. The more ornate the better. The early pieces are especially unique, and the care taken to create them is amazing. The quality is apparent even at a cursory glance.

Perfect for dressing up that simple top, vintage trim can really add a new dimension to clothing. Many high end shops such as Anthropologie already use this concept on a variety of its pieces, although their laces are new.

One thing that always perplexes me is how to categorize my style. In all things, I love good quality and fine craftsmanship. But these features can be seen in both elegant objects as well as "cutesy" informal pieces -- And I love both. So, my shop is a mismatch of different styles and eras. But for today I thought I would share three of my more sophisticated items ...

I believe this little shell piece is German and from the turn of the century. Its graceful lines and lovely tones make it a perfect accent for any decor. The cherub is especially beautiful ... The feathers add a little bit whimsy to this pièce de résistance.

What a lovely little bit of history this is! A handmade velvet doll box also dating to the late 19th century. The worn exterior only adds to the romanticism of this darling little object. Can't you see a precious doll nestled inside?

If you remember this post, you'll recall the fabulous auction box I found with feathers, tiaras and other such whimsical items. This blue velvet beauty came from the same treasure trove. I believe this particular hat to be Edwardian c. 1905. What a beautiful piece this is! Truly, a fabulous find...

Fit for a Queen

For this week's Vintage Thingy Thursday, I wanted to share a recent auction find... This spectacular c. 1840 rhinestone tiara. It's simply stunning, isn't it? I just love the repousse work on the central cartouche. And the stones are without blemish... A perfect piece of history.

This particular crown was buried beneath opera feathers and a fabulous Edwardian velvet hat. What exciting woman owned this early hair accessory? What sort of galas did she attend? These are the questions we ask when thinking about the owner of this rare example.

Unfortunately, all of the "teeth" on the comb have broken off. So, it can no longer be used as a hair piece. But it's just right for an altered jewelry project. Since it already has some damage, it can be given new life with a few simple alterations.

I purchased these fabulous miniature Art Deco Buckles last year in an auction lot. They hail from an estate in the north eastern part of the United States. Very interesting for mixed media jewelry - Would make fantastic clasps for bracelets and necklace. Even a focal piece for a simple design.

Communion/Wedding Vintage Pre WWII German Diecut

This is a really unusual diecut that has character. I believe it was first used for either confirmation or communion events. I personally think it would be great for a bridal piece. Really good quality German paper.

The luck of the Irish to ya! I only have 2 packs of these cute little fellows. Once these are gone, I don't believe I will find any more. Once again, great German quality paper and detail.

For this week's Vintage Thingy Thursday, I wanted to share our latest project- The 4th of July window. Teaming up with Malena, a talented interior designer, we created a really great patriotic look perfectly filled with classic antiques. The dress form with the banner flag swag is my favorite piece~ Very vintage!
Things have been going well at the shop - Lots of visitors and several customers. It's still very exciting to make a sale - Knowing that someone else appreciates and values the same objects & furniture that you do. Hopefully, I will always feel inspired and uplifted by my clients!

2 Wonderful examples found at Morning Glory Collects, a fabulous resource for learning about antique and vintage jewelry

Some of the greatest "things" in life are those which we cannot hold in the palm of our hand. As an antiques dealer, I am constantly coming across fabulous items. An early piece of ephemera, a faded velvet bag, colorful majolica - The list goes on. One thing I have to be careful of is to remember that these things are just that - only things. People and the memories we create with them are what make this existence worthwhile. An early Victorian pinchbeck piece that I sold last year on Rubylane. Pinchbeck is a copper and zinc substitute for gold -- A fabulous and collectible metal in its own right.

The Victorians were very sentimental and created meaningful jewelry to represent this characteristic. To remind them of what really matters, they created fabulous pieces pertaining to a rewarding life. The faith, hope, and love motif is one such example. Every time I come across these charms, I jump at the chance to own them. They are very special and a wonderful little memento.

Tiny Little Slippers

Starting off the show and tell of Brimfield findings is this wonderful pair of miniature ethnic shoes. A mere 2-1/4" long and 1/2" wide, this treasure can be cradled in the palm of your hand! I purchased this from the loveliest little shop in Sturbridge - Sadly I can't remember the name but she sold the most fantastic vintage clothing and textiles~

A Delightful Disarray

Brimfield, MA -- The mere mention of the name brings visions of deals and treasures galore. I still can't believe I had the chance to visit such a fabulous show~! So much to see and so little time. Even with 3 full days of exploring, I still wasn't able to see it all... Guess that means I have to visit again!
Purchases will be shared in a future post but I wanted to make sure everyone got to see the "splendidness" of this wonderful experience. Through these photographs, I hope you'll get a sense of the sheer excitement felt during the show.
Booths were filled to the brim with textiles, buttons, dolls, trinkets -- All my favorite things!
Just look at these notions- Doesn't this image make your mouth water with antiquing anticipation?
A fabulous little ditty - I can't even remember what she does - All I know is that she was too expensive for me to buy ... One regret I have! I believe she might have been a sewing kit. If anyone knows what she is, please share...
So many treasures to be found- There were dolls to be loved... I bought only doll parts for crafty purposes. I found some little legs that would be great for altered jewelry or shadow boxes.
Isn't this just a vision of romance? Each booth had a unique flavor revealing the personality of the vendor. It was a sheer delight to find so much concentrated in such a small area.
Enjoy looking at the captured "wonderfulness" of Brimfield. I hope every antique lover gets a chance to experience this at least once in their lives!

Slow but sure- Much like me getting a post written over these past few weeks! Time has flown by! I've missed you all and am truly going through blog withdrawal... I've been scouring the fields for deals for the up and coming Open House this weekend. We've found tons of smalls and wonderful crafty items. Brimfield was a fabulous experience and really turned up some exceptional pieces. From an Art Nouveau bust to an early 20th century birdcage, I have just the perfect treasure for every client and budget~

This postcard reminds me of one of my past regrets- Passing up an antique photograph which had real little girls wearing these fabulous handmade hats... To this day, I sigh over my missed piece of ephemera.

A Time to Laugh, A Time to Cry

Dear Blog Friends- Thank you so much for all the recent comments. I value each one and truly look forward to reading all of them... So, on that note, I thought I'd share the newest development for F & J ~ The signs are all put up! Don't they look just fabulous? I chose a brown on aqua color palette with a rococo style frame ~ I just love it!

For this week's Vintage Thingy Thursday, I wanted to highlight a special piece in my shop. Purchased long ago for my personal collection, I've decided to part with this dear little sign ~
It's a Victorian casket plate. During the late 19th century, there was a cult of mourning that focused on death and interment. Black and dark purple were the latest in fashion; jewelry made from the dead individual's hair was very common. This particular plaque was a memento of a precious soul - A loved one wanted something to remember them by.

Well, I'll soon be out of Parisian postcards to share but thought these were lovely and a fabulous addition to this week's Postcard Friendship Friday! Bonne Fete is used in Quebec to mean "Happy Birthday" -- But I think it is also a vintage way of saying the same in French speaking regions. If any of you readers know more about the phrase, please leave a comment - I'd love to be educated on the expression...
I think the graphics on these particular cards are enchanting ~ And the color on each one adds a very romantic feel.

"~Many Curious Things I See When Telling Fortunes In Your Tea~"

For this week's Vintage Thingy Thursday I thought I would share a fascinating little teacup. This particular piece is Aragon and composed of fine china. What makes it special you ask? Why, it's a divination cup! Used to decipher one's future, this magical little demitasse delights both young and old. Called tasseography, tea reading is a Turkish tradition usually initiated with the left over thick coffee grinds. For the practice itself, one must drink almost all of the tea (or coffee) and leave only a swish left in the mug. The clairvoyant then turns the cup upside down and waits for the grounds to stick to particular places in the cup. From there she leads her sitter down the murky path of the future.

Shop News: The big sign has been made and is en route to Flotsam & Jetsam. I'm very excited about getting the sign up - I think it will make a difference in traffic flow at the shop. Once people know what I am, they will hopefully flock to the newest little boutique in town!

Parisian Beauty

Thought I would share this wonderful image and accompanying script with all of you. I just love the sweetness of this particular postcard -- And the handwriting is so very beautiful! I only wish to have such fine penmanship. How romantic this card seems!

Snake Charmer

During the 19th century, snake motifs were viewed as fashionable, so much so that Queen Victoria's engagement ring from Albert was a snake with an emerald-set head. Throughout London, women could be seen wearing serpent rings, serpents entwined around their arms, and serpents coiled on their brooches.

Circa 1840, this piece is a lovely example of this custom. I bought this locket for myself several years ago but decided to sell it on Rubylane. How exciting that I sold it the very first day I listed it! It's such a nice surprise to know that someone out there loves your things as much as you do.

In addition to sharing my locket for Vintage Thingy Thursday (for which I was incredibly late!), I wanted to post some cards for Postcard Friendship Friday. I purchased this lovely piece of ephemera from the markets of Paris. I decided to scan the back of it too just because it was so romantic - The script makes this postcard very special indeed- How very sweet!

ps- Store updates: Well, I'm finding more furniture to fill up the spaces on the show floor. But a dear friend told me there is too much brown so something must be done about that! Color here we come ... The walls are also bare so I must find some wonderful frames and pictures to brighten up the room. I'd like to also hang some quilts on the walls for both texture and color. I'll try and take some pictures to share with everyone- I'm just a little embarrassed because it doesn't look perfect just yet... But I know these things take time!

Hi Dear Readers- Hope you are all enjoying this glorious Spring weather- The flowers are blooming, the bees are out- Everything is just lovely!
What better time for a fresh beginning with the shop! I don't have any pictures to share of my little space because I want everything to be perfect before I post on it. It's so sparse right now -I desperately need display cabinets and cute little pieces of furniture! But all shall come in due time.
Tomorrow I'm pricing some small things from my own collection so be sure to stop by if you get a chance- They'll be some real treasures coming into the shop. Thought I would post a few wonderful Parisian postcards- Aren't they simply divine? My favorite is this top one. Even with the postmark covering her face, the image is still beautiful. I love the costume!
Sorry if visits to everyone and posts in general have been sporadic (or non-existent). My computer at work is very slow and has trouble with blogs. But my husband, the computer guru, has perhaps fixed the problem. We'll see tomorrow! But I do plan on posting for Vintage Thingy Thursday so be sure to stop back by later this week for a wonderful antique treasure! You never know what you might see and learn ...

This week I thought I would share another Parisian find- This fabulous pierrot ... The most wonderful aspect is the worn silver plate patina. I just love how this piece has aged - Much like fine wine it has only become richer and finer in its appearance...

Other updates: Well, we've sold our first piece of furniture! A great mahogany barrister bookcase - Really a stunning piece. Additionally, a couple of cards have made their way to new customers. It's so exciting to sell to complete strangers - It means they really like us and our merchandise!

The Power of Banan-Appeal

Dingy tan versus Banan-appeal - No contest!
Hello Sweet Blog Friends- It's been a while! Things have been in a whirl wind since we last chatted. We painted the shop a lovely lemon meringue (#332 Benjamin Moore Banan-appeal)- And the trim is purple! How whimsical. I just love how it turned out- And with the help of dear friends (like Joanna above) I was able to get all of this done in under a week!

The window was a collaboration between Joanna and myself- Don't you just love the paper flowers? We made them together a few days ago... And we hung fairy light around the border. It really makes a lovely statement at night.

So, today was the first day the doors opened for customers. I had one sale (a card) but several browsers. So, traffic was good and potential clients are learning that there's a new shop in town.

Today was just a soft opening - But the Grand Opening will be May 22nd. We plan on doing some publicity and advertising before the big day... If you have any ideas on how to get people in the shop, please feel free to share- I need all the advise I can get:)

For this weeks Vintage Thingy Thursday I wanted to do something special. And nothing could be more fabulous than this antique ivory etui from the markets of France. An etui is a small ornamental case for holding needles, cosmetics, and other articles. This late 19th century one is especially unusual because it's shaped like an umbrella. The top screws off and that's how you would put your needles in...
So, in honor of my new store, I'm going to give away this wonderful little bibelot! All you have to do is leave a comment on any post; I will choose a winner next Saturday, the 10th (it's the first day Flotsam & Jetsam is open~).

Shhh ... It's a Secret!

I've got a secret to share with you ... I'm so excited about this new adventure- But I'm also scared to death! What if I don't sell anything- What if I can't make the rent? What if everyone thinks my little shop is ugly and stupid? What if my ideas are somehow wrong?

On the other hand, everyone seems really positive except one or two curmudgeons. And let's hope their predictions prove to be ill-founded. I have the support of my family and friends - And hopefully the little town of Kensington.

Our "soft opening" will be April 10th and our grand opening will be sometime in May. I've got a graphic designer working on a logo and signs and I just went to the bank regarding accepting credit cards (which is super expensive! Yikes!). But I know a good number of people use debit and CC so it's worth it. I don't want to turn someone (and a sale) away. And today I bought the cutest little bike to put out front as a display- And my friend Anna (of Chickens in the Basement fame) is making a fabulous wooden sign to hang on it... Right now, I'm on the search for a vintage 1950s prom dress for the window - So if anyone's got one hanging in their closet, leave a comment and I'll get back to you!

So, everything seems to be falling in place. There's no way I could think of everything - And that's part of the fun... Figuring it all out.

Taking a Leap

I have the most exciting news to share with all of you! Sit down- Take a deep breath: I'm opening up a brick and mortar store in Kensington, Maryland on Antiques Row. I sign the lease this week and move in on April 5th. Things are happening so quickly ... I just can't believe I'm going to have my own shop.
It's the cutest little space with a picture window and just enough room to make a cozy little boutique. I'm going in with 2 old & dear friends to make the burden a little lighter. But ultimately, the shop will be mine! Whopee!
So, mid April, you all must visit the DC area and make the journey to Flotsam & Jetsam Antiques - I promise you'll find vintage treasures and antique bibelots galore!

Saint Genevieve: Parisian Treasure

This lovely late 19^th century miniature icon is another Parisian market find. Featuring Saint Genevieve, the little antique is a true gem. Imagine my surprise when I learned Genevieve is the Patron Saint of Paris! How fascinating is that? OK, so maybe not too ground breaking but still interesting!

The detail on this Gothic style piece is meticulous – From the spires to the reticulated arches, the frame appears to be a little masterpiece. I've only seen one other icon like this and it was in poor condition.

On a side note, I've been quite disappointed with sales at the booth in Hagerstown. I'm just not sure if it's the right place for me. Either Raleigh was a hot market for my taste or people just aren't discovering my little space here. How long should one wait before moving to a new antique mall? Two months? One month? I don't want to jump the gun but I'm also concerned that wasted time is wasted money. What do you think?

Parisian Felicity

Another fabulous find from abroad! Fine hand tooled French c. 1880 leather box with etched familial scene and original key. Felicity indeed …What a beautiful setting of domestic tranquility – And perhaps a bit of romance between the two adults? Who knows? The fine detailing of the etching is lovely and incredibly intricate from the tiny bows in the child’s hair to the wrinkles in the rug.

There is a fabulous time weathered "patina" to the box. The leather is worn and scuffed – However, I personally feel this only adds to its charm.

The Lovely Ladies of Paris

One of the best surprises was finding European post cards in Paris. They were all fabulously romantic and inspiring- And I found many to be in my thrifty budget. I plan on consigning these beauties to Ornamentea and Panopolie (two sister stores- exceptional jewelry and mixed media supplies ... all things crafty). They are both located in Raleigh, N.C. - If you're in the area, you should definitely visit.
I plan on posting Parisian postcards over the next few Postcard Friendship Fridays so be sure to stop by for more alluring beauties...

Parisian Treasure #2

Straight from the streets of Paris, this breathtaking French ivory cherub shows European craftsmanship at its very best. Delicately hand carved, this tiny angel is Victorian, circa 1890 in date. A cherub such as this was a common gift during the era for newborns. The piece would have hung in the baby’s room or on the crib. This “guardian angel” would have protected the child from harm’s way. Continuing on the theme of tiny "finds", this treasure measures 2" tall, 2" wide, and 1/4" deep.

Parisian Treasure #1

Meet Pierrot -- The sweet, dear soul who pines for the lovely Columbine. This little clown has been cast aside for another beau, Harlequin ... Truly, a story of unrequited love. Pierrot's vain attempt at courting was met with only rejection and scorn. So here he sits, playing his mandolin and nursing a broken heart.
Made of gilded metal, this romantic sculpture is a mere 4-1/4" tall. He is seated on a green and brown marble base. His tarnished appearance only adds to the shabby charm of this piece.

I found him at a little shop in one of the markets in Paris. Even though he was a costly little trinket, I feel the sculpture has a fantastic appeal to the hunter and gatherer of "smalls". It will make a dramatic focal point for any collection.

Paris... A place of romance and magic- Truly, the city of lights. The trip was lovely and filled with all the things that a vacation should have- Like silly jokes and memorable moments together. My favorite parts were the Louvre and the fabulous markets! I'll be sure to share some pictures of our trip with you. I also plan to post on the items which I found at the flea markets - So many wonderful treasures- Each distinct and unique. Most of them will be going on my Rubyl ane site.

For now, I want to share a little something for Vintage Thingie Thursday hosted by The Coloradolady.

This wonderful treasure was found by my dear friend Laura of the Lady and the Librarian at the DC Big Flea in January. A mere $15 was all I had to pay for this fabulous piece of flapper history. This vintage powder puff is circa 1925 and is the epitome of the Jazz Age. Called a patter wand, it was probably more for show; however, other puffs were used not only for faces but for knees as well.

This is my first time posting for Thingy Thursday and I'm really looking forward to meeting new friends! Stay tuned for more Parisian flotsam and jetsam.

Just wanted to share some great birthday ephemera in honor of my 30th birthday! Thanks for all the sweet well wishes last week. I appreciate all the love and kindness sent my way. Since yesterday was officially the big day, I thought it was still appropriate to have some cards celebrating birthdays. The first was printed in Britain and is a real photograph. The back states "Rotary Photo, London, F.C." On the left side of the photo, the identification # is A. 1905-5. I'm not sure how old it is- Does anyone have a guess?

The second card is just a lovely sentiment piece with a vibrant rose. I can't find it right now but when I do, I'll share the inside of the card as well. I simply thought the flower graphic was stunning.I would like to apologize to all of last week's visitors from Postcard Friendship Fridays. I was out of town until yesterday and not able to respond to those who posted on my blog. I promise I'll be exploring your sites this week and weekend. Thanks for understanding!

Top of the Morning to Ya'

Found this delightful Raphael Tuck and Sons early 20^th c. St. Patrick’s Day card at the Olney Antique Village in Olney, MD. The condition is excellent being crisp and in an unused state.

I have often seen pigs on New Year’s Day cards and have wondered why such iconography was used. So, after seeing it on numerous St. Patrick’s Day cards I thought it may have something to do with luck. So off to trusty Google I go and find out that indeed in Germany (where many antique post cards were made and printed) the pig is a symbol of prosperity. Here are the highlights of what I found:

-When someone is lucky, it is customary to say “Ich Habe Schwein Gehabt” which means “I have had pig.” This particular phrase dates back centuries to agrarian lifestyles when if you had a pig to feed your family you were considered fortunate.

-Pigs are also very adaptable and useful animals. They can live on pasture, farm waste and crop residues and are good breeders. A family which has a pig will never grow hungry.

-All parts of the pig are edible – including the snout and foot. Think also of the little pink marzipan pigs which have a penny in the snout—also for good luck.

Where Are You Sweet Spring?

Found these two lovelies in an old 19th century scrapbook - Aren't they wonderful? They make me long for flowers and warm breezes.

I was finally able to get out of the house today and go to Hagerstown to see my booth. Sales were solid this weekend and hopefully will pick up as the weather improves. I've noticed that weekends are much busier than weekdays- But I guess that's to be expected.

As an aside, I believe many businesses will be hurt by the snow storms; most of us were out of commission for about a week or so. Since February's already a slow month, it doesn't help to have a week go by with little to no sales ...

On an upward note, I'm excited about going to an auction with my friend Tim tomorrow. Hopefully I'll find some goodies! I have the buying itch and hopefully will get a chance to scratch it soon!

Just wanted to share this absolutely stunning postcard for Postcard Friendship Fridays... This particular beauty is embossed and copyrighted 1910 by John Winsch. The artwork is by Samuel Schmucker.

I found the following information on John Winsch via Jewel's Antique Postcards:

"John O. Winsch, of Stapleton, New York, was a publisher of superior quality greeting postcards.

He first issued postcards in 1910, shortly after the passage of the Payne-Aldrich Act, which increased tariffs on imported cards. The Winsch cards were printed in Germany and imported to the United States for distribution.

Winsch postcards sold at two for five cents, when the common price was one cent each. While some Winsch postcards were issued in sets of six; most of the better designs were issued in sets of four.

The most collected of the Winsch postcards are the Halloween designs by American art nouveau artist, Samuel L. Schmucker.

Winsch reached its peak in 1911, but continued in business until 1915. During this short time Winsch copyrighted over 3,000 designs."

Winter Wonderland

I entitled this post "Winter Wonderland" to be positive; however, this weather is terrible! We're snowed in, have lost power for several days, and am tired of eating carbs. Thankfully, our water is heated by gas and we have a gas stove (hence the eating of many noodles and couscous). We do have a fireplace so that has helped as well. But not getting out is a problem- The roads are icy and driving is treacherous.

So, thankfully, I had ordered some Stephen King books earlier in the month. Right now, I'm reading Firestarter which is a real page turner. Up next are It and The Shining (I'm a big horror fan). I also still have one Valentine's card to make - Although mailing them may pose a problem... We haven't gotten our mail in several days and I'm not sure if the post office is even open!

Some rays of light: Rubylane is doing well! I sold both of the Galluba and Hofmann dolls I featured on an earlier post - Very exciting! I've also sold a scarab pendant, an Uncle Wiggily mug, and a bunny candy container... Must be people internet shopping with the bad weather.

These internet sales are a definite moral booster since my booth in Hagerstown is really suffering from the snow and ice. But I plan on going there Monday to take care of business. Hopefully sales will increase soon.

Warms Your Heart...

With record breaking snow fall, Maryland and DC have virtually shut down. My husband and I did get out today -- A surprising number of cars were on the road. But I suspect many people will not go in to work tomorrow.

So, what will all those home bound people be doing? Crafting, of course! haha- While not everyone will be armed with a glue stick and glitter, I certainly will be having some artsy fun...
Speaking of which, here's the latest installment of Valentine's ephemera. This die cut is a wonderful example of Victorian printing- Bright colors and vivid images.

Won't You Be My Valentine?

Thought I would share some of my newest postcards for your winter craftiness. I just love both of these and thought the angels were especially precious. Hope your February is fabulous and full of creating ... I myself am working on Valentine cards for my family... But shhhh- It's a surprise! It's not something I do a lot so it takes me forever to arrange everything just right.

Also, a shout out to dear Anna - She sent me the most wonderful little Valentine's package full of velvety hearts and paper diecuts. Just superb! She finds the best stuff... Kind of like Snapple.

Continuing on the theme of risque beauties, thought I would share this vintage postcard. I found her on one of my recent antiquing adventures. Isn't she lovely?

I have some great Valentine's themed ephemera to share with you all soon... I just have to get around to scanning it. I've been fiercely collecting tantilizing tidbits of paper for "crafty"pursuits. It's so much fun looking at antique postcards and such. There's always something new to explore and learn about - And you rarely see the same image more than once.

Bathing Beauties and Naughty Nellies!

Bawdy bisques are fun, slightly scandalous figurines in a delicate size. I've recently come across two of these tantalizing dolls during my forays into area antique malls.**I had no idea what I had found! After some research I realized that both figures are made by the German manufacturer Galluba and Hofmann. Made c. 1910, these beauties are representative of the perfect figure at that time. These ladies would have been sold either free standing or attached to a box of candy.

Even with the bodice torn on the relaxed doll, it is still book valued between $700 to $900. The standing beauty is valued between $700 and $1000. Both of the figurines retain their original mohair wig; the reading lady has one tiny chip on her left hand (which probably reduces her value to $500 or so).

So, next time you're in an antique mall, be sure to look for a deal- You never know what you'll find!

I plan on putting both of these lovelies on Rubylane to hopefully find some keen collectors of naughty bisques!

**I found one doll at the Antique Station in Frederick, Maryland and the other at the Emmitsburg Antique Mall in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Both malls have several quality dealers (along with the ever present junk) BUT I wasn't able to finish either mall in the 2-1/2 hours I spent there. So, bring your comfy shoes and be prepared to hunt!**

Hello friends- Just a wonderful little postcard to brighten your day! And promises of more ephemera to come... I just love "paper antiques" - You rarely see the same image & hunting for the perfect one is tons of fun! Plus, they're usually light on the budget; I rarely spend more than a few dollars on even the most fabulous of examples. I just discovered a cache of exceptional scraps & Victorian pieces at The Pink Poet (who I've mentioned several times on my blog). Precious Little One

I found this wonderful scrap on our trip to PA at a lovely little bookstore called the Doe Run Valley Book shop. I thought this piece was especially interesting because it advertised Godey's Lady's Book. For $2 a year, a patron was given "1000 pages of Reading, comprehending Poetry, Stories, Sketches, History, Novels, Dialogues, and Charades by the best magazine writers of the day..." What a bargain! One of the interesting things about this advertisement is the emphasis on "Full Size Cut Paper Patterns." 1885 is such a different world from today! Fashions are found by most in the mall or out of catalogues whereas they were found on the pages of magazines and books during
the 19th century.

I thought this little "Sleeping Love" cupid would be perfect in a Valentine's collage or card. I'm trying to collect more colored images but I thought this one was quite special. Enjoy!

Great Expectations

Well, we're officially into January and 17 days into a new decade. A fresh start- A clean plate... What to do with all of these chances to start over again? New Years resolutions ... A time to reflect on what's been and what will be.

"For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning."

With all this talk of new opportunities, I thought I would share some of my own resolutions for this year. The first is to pray more. I try to have a special time (sometimes several) each day where I lift up needs and requests to God. I want to expand this and have more deliberate moments with our heavenly Father.

Secondly, I want to blog more. I've been a little delinquent this past year with posts and such... I would love to post twice a week and make more connections with the blogisphere. I do plan on posting more free ephemera and also having digital downloads for sale (although this may take some time).

Last, but not least, I want to do all that is in my power to prevent my depression. Sometimes I don't fight hard enough against it and it can get the best of me. But this year I plan to put as much effort as possible into getting (and staying) better. The first step is getting through January... After that, it will be getting through the winter. I plan on taking one month (each day in fact) at a time.

So, what are your New Year's resolutions? Any wishes for the New Year?

Lovely Bibelots and Tantilizing Treasures

Lovely little treasures; sweet nothings; tiny bibelots-- All of these phrases describe the merchandise at this January's Big Flea. Every booth was filled to the brim with beautiful objects. Handmade trinkets, old volumes of sacred books, sparkling jewels- Truly, something for everyone!
I thought I would share what I feel is the most stunning booth at the Big Flea (not only this past weekend but each and every time). Roberto Frontera-Suau of Elizabeth City, NC is the owner of Textiles de Conde. He carries the most exquisite antique clothing and linens as well as miscellanious feminine objects such as millinery and toiletry items.
Roberto's booth is one that would take hours to thoroughly explore- However, I managed to squeeze in some time between shopping to browse his wonderful wares. I was not disappointed! Such treasures abounded ... These pictures show just a snap shot of what this collector carries. On a different note, I promise to soon post more on my personal Big Flea finds- Check back for more vintage goodies (especially freebie ephemera!)

Shiny Sparkling Snowflakes

They say each one is different - Snowflakes are just as unique as people. And the same can be said for many things which are handmade. Our stamp gets put on those pieces we create. No one will ever make something in the same way you do ...

All this talk of individuality leads me to share the ornaments that I made with my family over the holidays. Using Austrian Swarovski crystals and wooly felt balls we made a wonderful crafty interpretation of snowflakes!

Using a wire form we placed the crystals on the snowflake and then interspersed the felt balls in the pattern. The balls are a little tricky to use - I had to handle a very large leather needle in order to make the initial hole in the felt. But once that is finished, you just slip the crystals and felt on and all is well! I do recommend using a felt ball on the tip of each arm- It's a little awkward to finish with a bead- I broke several trying to do that... ***On a completely different topic, I have been brainstorming about having an online digital presence using my eclectic collection of ephemera. Would you readers (and other crafty gals and gents) be interested in purchasing some digital copies of my Victorian images and books? Picture Perfect: Postcard Friendship Fridays

Just thought I would share this lovely little trade card image. Although it's technically not a postcard, it's definitely a fabulous piece of early 20th c. ephemera. And the doll and kitty are so wonderful. This card advertised Lion Coffee - On the reverse it states "A Picture Card: In each package of the Lion Coffee now at your grocer's. Many designs." So, it's like an early cracker jack giveaway. Chromolithography was just beginning to hit its stride during this time. The Victorians were crazy for these images not only decorating and collecting but also for crafts of their own, like collages. Children, pets, and romantic scenes are some of the most popular motifs.

Well, I'm off to the DC Big Flea this weekend! I can't wait to do some junking. Even though I've been visiting local antique malls for my fix, there's still nothing quite like 2 huge buildings filled to the brim with fantastic finds! I'm salivating just thinking about it...

Winter at Longwood Gardens

When we think about winter, gardens don't necessarily come to mind; however, Longwood Gardens in PA begs to differ. They miraculously bring this bare season to life with a dazzling display of lights and colors. The conservatory is brimming with beautiful arrays of flowers - The outside is full of twinkling lights conveying thoughts of the holidays. I just wanted to share a little bit of my experience there and encourage you to take the journey to Longwood - I promise you won't regret it!

My VERY favorite plant - And the best part of our trip! The Old Man Cactus - How funny! They look like little old plant people. I laughed all the way through the rest of the conservatory (seriously- Ben had to tell me to be quiet!)

As you can see, we really enjoyed our visit to Longwood. Truly a great place to spend New Years!

Beautiful Beginnings

A new year- a chance to start afresh. I'm praying that this year will be full of joy and healing. My first major depression in five years happened last January so I'm fearful that it will happen again this January. But I have to remember that this year will be different and I can make it through with God's infinite love and care.

As for happier (and less serious) topics, I'm having so much fun finding images for everyone to use. It's so exciting and refreshing to go into a antique mall or boutique and shop for my crafty blog friends. I hope my ephemera is useful to my readers. Please let me know how you're using the pictures- I'd love to know what artsy endeavors everyone comes up with. I believe it will spur me on to find even more beautiful pieces. I personally use the ephemera for computer desktop backgrounds - I also like to collage so they come in handy for having something unique for the project. The pieces I posted today are some of my favorites- Especially the Marie Antoinette type image.

Speaking of craftiness, I promise to get pictures of the ornaments I made with my family. They're in cyber limbo right now ... My sister is having to reformat them so my MAC can read them.
As for other artsy endeavors, I'm now working on learning how to knit. What a challenging task! My dear friend Renee is trying to teach me this art- Boy, do I now have great respect for all those knitters out there. And when someone knits me something from now on I'll know how much love was spent making it.
So, what new craftiness are you all working on? Anything promising for projects out in blogland? Last year I worked on a collaborative book swap - Tons of fun! Are there any new projects or swaps to get our creative juices flowing?

Merry Christmas everyone! Sorry it's a day late but we've been traveling up and down the East coast for the past week with little to no internet access. But I hope everyone had a glorious holiday; I'm certainly looking forward to New Year's as well! My husband and I will be traveling to PA to visit the Brandywine Museum and Longwood Gardens. Each will still be decorated for the holidays. I'm especially looking forward to the museum for its exhibit on illustrators of Alice in Wonderland.
As for this post, I thought I'd include a little gift to you readers - This adorable photograph certainly makes me smile- He (or she) looks rather toasty in this big fur coat. I think this image would be perfect for many a winter craft...
Speaking of crafts, I have some pictures to share soon of the Christmas craft I made with my family this year. We made snowflakes using felt balls and Swarovski crystals - It's not too late to enjoy some time creating with family and friends!

A Merry Time of Year

Thought I would share some images my sister found for me. What wonderful ephemera!

I hope you are all having a bright and merry season. I've just finished wrapping the presents - Not too many this year. I didn't even make it through one roll of wrapping paper! With purse strings being a little tight, our families decided to draw names and just get presents for one member of the family. It sure makes holiday shopping a lot easier.

We still have the traditions to keep us together. For instance, the ladies in my family all play Merry Jingo (which is like Christmas Bingo). We buy fun prizes and have lots of laughs! We're also planning on making a craft this year (I'll be sure to take photos to share with everyone).

So be sure to keep warm this night and think of all the lovely holiday traditions you share with your family. I'd love to hear about them...

Making the Season Bright with Vintage Graphics!

The Romance of a New Year

I found this wonderful post card at the Gaithersburg Doll and Toy show this past weekend. I simply fell in love with its romantic charm. Hope you'll find a great use for it this upcoming New Years... I have 8 more pieces of fabulous ephemera to share with you over the course of the holiday season.
Speaking of romance, I just purchased a large estate of vintage and antique lace for my booth up in Hagerstown, MD. If you're local, be sure to stop by and take a peak at my bits and pieces. Some are simply breath taking!
Other news: Starting to volunteer at the local Prevention of Blindness thrift shop. I'm very excited about this! It's more like a quaint antique store than a second hand store. I begin on Thursday so wish me luck:) Also this week is a show I'm doing at a friend's office. They have an annual fair where workers can come and peruse the wares- I'm looking forward to it!

Christmas Wishes

Just a post to muse a little on how time flies. I just packed away my Halloween decor and now it's time to put up the Christmas goodies!~

This year is a little different for me than others. It's the first year that I've really struggled consistently with my bi-polar. It seems like a very personal thing to share but I think it's important to not feel ashamed and to help others know they are not alone. Mental illness is just as real as any other disease and it affects thousands of individuals.

My wish for the upcoming year is for things to get back to normal. I long to be my true self and not the quiet, shy person bi-polar has made me. I wish for the meds to be straightened out and for the ability to work consistently without depression. I also want motivation to do the things which I used to enjoy so much... These are my Christmas wishes.

This post is more serious (and revealing) than my normal writings. But sometimes you just run out of things to say and all that's left is the real stuff.

Building Your Nest

One of my favorite things to do in a new locale is to visit antique stores. So, on our recent trip to New Orleans, I stopped in at this wonderfully whimsical establishment called "perch." True happenstance was this encounter! I had no idea such a treasure lie unassumingly on Magazine Street.
Just look at these gorgeous chandeliers ... And the fantastic way they used material to mimic spooky webs for Halloween.

Even though this shot is a little fuzzy, I didn't want to exclude the great color scheme and light fixture.

The displays and arrangement of everything was perfectly eclectic - A very fresh approach to decorating with European antiques.

Sacred Stones

I've mentioned my fascination with graveyards before on this blog- Well, what a more fitting season than now to revisit this infatuation?

After work today, I decided to make a little trip to a local cemetery- Won't you come along with me?

Welcome to a place where rest is found - Both for the living and the deceased. A little off color but indeed a fascinating topic. I found a number of early 19th century tombstones that would make lovely rubbings- So worn were the inscriptions that the naked eye had a hard time deciphering the text.Walking among the stones, I was overwhelmed by a sense of calm- With the leaves falling like light snow, I felt showered with peace and tranquility. Kneeling down to touch the worn surfaces, I was struck by how fragile life really is.
The graveyard was quiet yet all around us traffic flew by, each passenger reaching for that next goal. Yet all to soon those goals are met and life slows down... Hauntingly beautiful, life is a journey that often ends with an outward sigh of perhaps and what could have been.
With such melancholy thoughts, what could fit the mood better than the cult classic Interview with a Vampire?I was hoping to read amongst the stones ... A somewhat dark atmosphere for this tale of seduction and night by Anne Rice. Alas, this cemetery was not designed with the Victorian aesthetic in mind. No wandering pathways or delightful benches on which to contemplate. So, I took my snapshots of "past lives" and went home to devour more of a tale of horror.

Be prepared for more graveyards and ghosts- My husband and I are taking a trip to New Orleans for our 5th anniversary! 5 splendid years of laughter and friendship... How time does fly! Part of our vacation will be touring the fabulous graveyards of New Orleans, the city where Anne Rice based much of her work.

Stepping Back in Time: Antique Crossroads

Welcome to Antique Crossroads, a place where time stops. Just walking through these aisles is taking a step back to simpler moments. Whatever era and/or object your heart desires, this Hagerstown, MD mall can provide. Take for instance kitschy Elvis memorabilia or funky scarves- No where else can offer such sublime pieces of history!
Just look at these vintage hair caps- Used for keeping one's hair dry during a dip in the pool.
Remember the Elvis comment- Well, here's the King in 3-D! He's definitely in THIS building!
Can we talk about how awesome this orange crinoline skirt is? I think I've got to have it just for the color - It would look FABULOUS on my vintage dress form.
So, here's the first installment regarding Antique Crossroads. Expect to hear and see a lot more about this fantastic locale- It is my newest booth location and absolutely wonderful!

What's A Girl To Do?

Yep, here's my booth. It's deathly bare! What am I going to do??? I must find furniture and soon! I have so many wonderful, little things. But all those darling curiosities need to be displayed properly. Therefore, once again I say- I MUST FIND FURNITURE! (notice capitalization and exclamation point)...

On the bright side, I was still able to create some sweet vignettes with the fabulous smalls I have. Don't you just love these tiny Asian slippers?
This doll chest is filled with old lace and buttons- Two of my favorite things!
My locked case was filled to the brim with glorious little bibelots from my jaunts to various sundry places. What about the Kewpie teapot and saucer? Pure cuteness!
I love miniatures and have always tried to buy them up when they're available. This shot shows a lovely Empire style brass mirror perfect for a little girl's dollhouse.
Art Nouveau is one of my favorite styles- From my own collection you will see the small vase decorated with a Sarah Bernhardt type figure. This piece was probably a give-away at a fair or party. Last but not least is my collection of vintage Halloween items purchased last year. These plates, napkins, and nut cups are both rare and desirable in the antiques realm. I can't wait to see what people think of them at the new booth.Well, that's it for now. Hopefully I'll find some appropriate furniture over the next week or so. I'll be sure to take more pictures as the evolution of my booth takes place. Wish me luck!

Tiny Treasures

Hi everyone!

So, you may be wondering why I've been slack on posts... Well, with the Big Flea and then a subsequent trip to PA, I've been a tired little antique hunter. But the trip up was successful and I found some really great charms and goodies for my trunk show in November. Why don't we take a look and see what treasures I discovered!

I was specifically looking for small eclectic curiosities to be used as accents for jewelry and other crafty items. One of the best buys was a miniature harmonica that you can still play! I also uncovered a large assortment of Victorian buttons along with some abalone cameos. Colored tear drop crystals are also a find.
Pictured here are 2 of my more expensive buys- A Victorian strawberry pin cushion and a bullion styled purse. These two pieces will be listed on Rubylane, my online boutique.
Another adorable find was this vintage "Kewpie" perfume bottle. When you turn the crown topper, you dab a bit on your wrist and neck. Isn't this little guy great? This item is also for Rubylane.

Other finds include Catholic charms, fun rhinestone rings, postcards for my ephemera collection, old railroad tokens, Indian coins, coral Asian miniature figures, antique spectacles, and mother of pearl buckles.

New Adventures

I'm excited to say that the Big Flea was a successful venture for my little business. Flotsam and Jetsam's sales were strong, so much so that I'm planning on participating in the January show! This experience was my first in terms of a larger, more official venue. It was so encouraging to hear positive feedback on both my merchandise and my displays.

Random Goodies including an Eleanor Roosevelt signature, a low brow penny doll and some silver spoons.This little display was my romantic section where a Victorian pincushion and a French porcelain shoe add elegance to my booth.Funky mannequin with frame display- Something to catch a customer's eye when passing.

The Halloween merchandise did exceptionally well and was a great return on investment.

I tried to create miniature vignettes to entice buyers to stop and take a look around. The rug helped to make the booth look more homey and inviting (that is until it sold!).

I want to thank everyone for their prayers and encouragement. This event was a fantastic experience to both learn from and be invigorated by ...

Other News: I've finally found a booth! I'm excited to be joining Antique Crossroads in Hagerstown, MD. Even though it's about an hour and 15 minutes away, it's by far one of the best antique malls I've ever visited. The dealers have great displays and wonderful items. The workers are also considerate and more than willing to help customers. What a great way to kick off the Fall season!

I'm really looking forward to visiting PA this week for a buying trip. I'm going especially for the Kutztown Renningers Extravaganza. This "new adventure" is very exciting for me. 3 days of collecting odds and ends for Flotsam & Jetsam... I'll be sure to take some photos to share with everyone. Parisian treasures abound in Frederick MD at Tiara Day - A must see stop when visiting the fabulous boutiques of Market Street. Filled to the brim with vintage clothing, lush body products, and unusual antiques, Tiara Day is simply heaven for the glamour girl.
Proprietress Maria Peck is no stranger to the antique world. Her grandmother and mother were avid collectors and clued little Maria in on this vintage world full of glitter and lace. Tiara Day prides itself on a fine collection of pre-1960 clothing- Victorian, Edwardian, Deco are just some of the styles available. The largest emphasis is on the 1920's through the 1940's. Each piece is hand selected for the shop - Cherry picked from the best of the best. Hats and handbags are selected for their unique shapes and form. When I asked Maria what her favorite items in the store were, she immediately said the wonderful doll heads that sport little rhinestone tiaras. Also, she is fond of dress forms and old display cases. Vintage holiday items are also on her fav list. As for best sellers, look no further than the jewelry - I guess diamonds are a girl's best friend. So, where does Maria find such glorious items? With help from specific buyers to a friend who makes frequent jaunts to Paris, there seems to be a never ending supply of these glorious pieces.

Random Musings...

I thought I'd chat a little bit about what's going on in my life right now (at least the parts of it that are semi-interesting that is). I'm very excited about the Big Flea coming up as it will be my first major show. I've had smaller trunk shows at the fabulous Ornamentea but I've never exhibited at a major antique venue such as the Big Flea. So, we're going to try it out and see what sells. My lovely sister Shannon is coming up to help so that I'll be able to take bathroom breaks as well as do a little shopping.

Other things... Well, I'm on the waiting list for Antique Crossroads in Hagerstown, MD. By the fact that I'm #6 shows what an excellent antique mall it is. Let's just hope I get in before the big holiday season. Additionally, I'm still consigning to Ornamentea and hope to do another trunk show there in November. Also, Rubylane and Etsy are keeping me a little busy what with listing and a few sales here and there. Other news is my up and coming position at the Pink Poet. The Pink Poet is a fabulous vintage "romantic" store filled to the brim with exciting treasures. I'll be working 2 days a week there starting in October. What fun!

We've finally gotten the house together and are hosting a Halloween party - Ben and I are big fans of the holiday and can't wait to use our new house to entertain. I promise to soon show pictures of my "organized" craft space. I've just got to figure out what to do with the walls. I really need something to pop and right now it just isn't here.

Halloween is a magical time of year when it seems that anything can happen. You can be anything you want (that is at least for a few hours)- A beautiful queen, a swash buckling pirate, even a cackling witch- Whatever your heart desires... Which brings us to the art of figuring out what exactly is in our destinies. The above card touches on divination (the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown by supernatural means) a popular past time for Halloween parties.

With this great fall-like weather, I thought something to celebrate the up-coming season would be a welcome piece of ephemera. I just love owls and this particular image came from a Victorian scrapbook filled with trade cards and the "flotsam and jetsam" of that time. "Whooo" knows -- Maybe this fabulous weather will stay for a while!

How the West Was Won!

Isn't this a great image? And rather rare since you don't see many Western images in ephemera. She has a very "Gibson Girl" look about her. Hopefully, you'll find some creative endeavor to use her for.

Just thought I'd also share a new item that I added to my Rubylane shop. What a wonderful paper mache snuff box. I love the phrase "Forget me not." Very sweet... The faux tortoiseshell design really takes the look up a notch. Yesterday I also added a c. 1940s puffy heart and an Uncle Wiggily advertising premium for Ovaltine. Be sure to stop by and browse a bit.

I plan on adding items regularly now - I'm renting an out of home office to help with motivation and also for company. Working for yourself tends to lead to being alone and thus a little lonely. But the space I've got is at Sparrows, a lovely antique store filled with beautiful French furniture. There's a little room in the back that works perfect for me listing things online. One day soon I'll share some of the wonderful pieces they have.

Just thought I would share some of my favorite ephemera pieces over the next couple of days. With our recent move, I've had to confine my collection to one large rubbermaid box. And that my friends was a challenge. So from my fruits of labor, you receive a "harvest" of my very best copy right free images.

19th Century Trade Card

Now I'm on the hunt for more REALLY good pieces -- Color images especially. I find that trade cards* are my best bet. Which reminds me of two more images I need to scan... Ah, the work of a blogger never ends.Hand Tinted c. 1910 Postcard

*Trade cards are 19th - early 20th century advertisements for a number of retailers, including clothing, undergarments, farm supplies, sewing, etc. They are usually the size of a baseball card but can be as large as a postcard or even 5 x 7. Victorians used these tradecards (and other paper goodies) to decorate their homes and bring lively color to bare walls. Indeed, these trade cards became art for the masses.

Mrs. Brown's secret is out-- She uses a "Duplex" corset... Can you even imagine wearing such an undergarment? What women will do in the name of fashion!

What would they think of our push up bras and tiny little thongs? And what of bikinis and Speedos? The horror!~But I do love this piece of ephemera- It folds open to reveal the "secret". Hope you can use these images in your artwork and crafty projects. I know I can't wait to figure out how to incorporate it into one of my collages.

Join me in delightful revelry for a magical Halloween fete! For this swap, choose items for your partner that are relevant to a masked Halloween ball. For instance, crowns, jewelry, masks, party favors, fancy shoes, game pieces and parts, clock items (for when those clocks start turning 12, the witching hour begins!)... Discuss with your partner if you'd like to have all your items Halloween toned or perhaps something a little lighter - Whatever you choose, be sure to have fun with it!

I wanted to start sign-ups early so everyone would have a chance to make at least one of the items. In addition to this handmade gift, please include other goodies that fit the style and character of your partner (so be sure to ask them lots of "getting to know you" questions).

Lovely Little Gifts

Well, the unpacking is finished and everything is (almost) in place. We're really starting to feel like the DC area is home. My office is fairly neat and tidy... I'll have to take a few shots of my room soon to show off my (not so neat) storage system (meaning stuffing everything in the closet!).
Some dear friends sent welcome packages and I wanted to share my gifts with you. Up first is a wonderful orange cinnamon potpourri made with citrus fruits, leaves, and cloves. To die for! Erica also sent me a handmade vintage style tea towel - Just look at the embroidered Mr. Orange.
Speaking of cute, this little matchbox is from the lovely LiLi. All the way across an ocean traveled this little parcel. And what a diminutive sight this gnome and mushroom are! An enchanting little creation this is!

Well, I promise to keep in touch more now that we've settled into our new home. I can't wait to explore new places and visit old PA for some great antiquing!

Thought I'd take a break from unpacking to do a little post on the "joys" of moving to a smaller house... Which means, a smaller work and craft space. Now don't get me wrong - I know I'm lucky to have a room dedicated to my office and play area. But it is certainly going to be a challenge fitting all my big dreams into my new smaller purple room (I went a little bold with the color).

A Little Late Getting on the Bandwagon...

Hello friends- Well, I'm still trying to get out of the blogging funk I've been in recently; sometimes figuring out what to say is really the hardest part. So, I finally found something!

The inspiration for this post is to admit my new fixation on the Twilight series. I was vehemently opposed to it until last week - Mostly due to the fact that it's on an 8th grade reading level with an occasional SAT word thrown in for sport (I was an English major with a penchant for classics). But since I've had to pack up my booths and haven't found much to list online, I've felt restless and a little down. So, I decided to at least give them a try. Believe it or not, reading this series has sparked my everpresent (but dormant) infatuation with mysterious topics.

I'm an Anne Rice fan & Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the first couple of seasons- it went downhill after Angel left) is my all time favorite T.V. program. So, naturally, anything with vampires peaks my interest. Let's just say, I read 500 pages of the second Twilight book in less than two days. Can we say obsessed?

So, now that the cat's out of the bag, who else admits they are a fan? Come on- I promise I won't tell!

On a side note, Ben and I are really moving to the DC area (Silver Spring, MD to be exact). Everything is in place and the ball starts rolling on the 9th (meaning the moving company comes to haul our stuff out).

Due to moving, I've had to close my booths here in Raleigh - I didn't realize how hard it would be. I feel so lost and restless. I'm not sure if I'll be able to have a booth in MD because I haven't found a Mall that is close enough yet. So, I'm thinking shows and online may be my main venues at this point. My first big show will be the DC Big Flea on September 19-20th. I've had smaller trunk shows with Panopolie/Ornamentea here in Raleigh but never anything as big as the Chantilly show. So, wish me luck!

Hopefully I'll be back to posting regularly soon. Maybe inspiration will be revived once we are in our new home...

Julia Margaret Cameron was one such artist. Her image s are filled with Pre Raphaelite symbolism and magic. Much like fallin g down the rabbit hole, when one views a Cameron photograph, they are reminded of childhood and dreams long forgotten.

In 1863, Cameron was given a camera by her daughter for a birthday present. Over the next 11 years she became one of the most influential artists of her time. Her talent and work gives hope to those of us who are always searching, always learning .

Flea Market Bliss

Hope everyone is enjoying this wonderful spring & summer weather. Vacation was lovely and a much needed respite... Now, back to my real world of antiques and ephemera (which, by the way, I do love my job!)...

So, I thought I'd share some fun finds from today's Raleigh Flea Market - What a fabulous day to shop!

The first two images show a grouping of old type letters- Which were gorgeous but since I already have over 100 of them for my stock, I decided I could pass...

I did find a cache of masonic pins, enameled beauties, and wonderful old glass medicine bottles. I also found a Victorian belt buckle, a vintage whistle, and some great miniature pins. So, all in all, a nice little haul for a Sunday afternoon.

A comparison between Art Nouveau and Art Deco came to mind as a topic of great interest to those of us who deal in the decorative arts. Although I claim no professional knowledge of the topic, I do understand a little bit of the history between the two.Antoni Gaudi, Casa Batllo, Barcelona, 1904-06 (Art Nouveau)

Art Nouveau is a style that was once considered avant garde and ground breaking. Traditional artists and craftsman shunned the flowing lines and whiplashes of this new art. Yet with proponents like Bing, Sarah Bernhardt, and Toulouse Lautrec, Art Nouveau found a voice, particularly at the 1900 Exposition Universelle.

The years between 1895 and 1910 saw an explosion of Art Nouveau work and proved the movement to be a reckoning force. The short time span is what makes Art Nouveau furniture, jewelry, and art work so valuable – It was only made for a specific time period, one that barely spanned a decade.

So, what exactly is Art Nouveau? Well, it’s a romantic style full of grace. Motifs include beautiful women with flowing hair, a strong tendency toward natural elements, and a distinct lack of symmetry. Excluding the gorgeous women (don’t we all wish we were so alluring), most portrayals of nature were realistic. Beauty was of utmost importance.

Just as Art Nouveau was a reaction against the strict regime of traditional styles, Art Deco was the antidote for the freeflowing lines of its predecessor. Beginning in the 20’s, this style dominated the decorative arts for over two decades. In 1925, Art Deco work was the norm at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art held in Paris.

Art Deco is in so many ways the geometric arch rival to Art Nouveau. Both were new and refreshing during their “reign”. Where Art Nouveau is curvaceous, Art Deco is linear. Shapes and straight lines dominant the palate. Its sophistication is portrayed through simple lines and stylized natural motifs, in exact opposition to the realistic approach of Art Nouveau.Silvered bronze bookends
